ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the value of modified early warning score (MEWS) in clinical status assessment and outcome prediction of heat stroke patients. Methods The clinical data of 46 heat stroke patients were collected.According to the severity, the subjects were divided into mild group and severe group;and alternatively, according to the treatment outcomes, the subjects were also divided into survival group and death group. The MEWS at admission was employed for comparison of the differences in severity and outcome of heat stroke between groups.Receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC curve) was used to evaluate the accuracy of MEWS used at admission in assessing severity and predicting outcome of heat stroke patients. Results The results of MEWS calculated at admission in mild and severe heat stroke patients showed significant difference between them (3.00 ± 1.70 vs.6.85 ± 3.03,P =0.004).The area under the ROC curve (AUC) of MEWS got at admission for the diagnosis of severe heat stroke was 0.864 ± 0.056.The results of MEWS obtained at admission in survived and died heat stroke patients were 5.13 ± 2.96 and 9.25 ± 2.05,respectively (P =0.037).The AUC of MEWS used at admission for predicting the death of heat stroke patients was 0.867 ± 0.061.Conclusions The initial MEWS is useful to accurately assess and predict the outcome of heat stroke patients.Heat stroke patients with higher level of MEWS used at admission than 4.5 could be diagnosed as severe heat stroke, and whereas the value of MEWS got at admission higher than 7.5 could be the indicator of the poor prognosis.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate effects of complement C5a receptor and P38-MAPK on myocardial injury brought about by septic shock in rats. Method The early septic shock models were established by the method of cecal ligature and incision (CLI). A total of 30 Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly( random number) divided into normal control group ( n = 6 ) and model group ( n = 24 ) and the model group was further 12 hours later divided into 12 h subgroup (n = 12) and 24 h subgroup (n = 12). The arterial blood samples were collected 12 hours later for detecting the levels of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and creatine kinase (CK), and then the rats were sacrificed and the myocardial tissues were taken to assay the expressions of C5a receptor and P38-MAPK by using immunohistochemistry after HE staining. And the above procedure as did in 12 h subgroup was done 24 hours later. Results Compared with the control group, the levels of LDH and CK in rats of Model group were significantly higher (P < 0. 05). There were significant differences in LDH and CK between 24 h subgroup and 12 h subgroup [(2 568.9 ± 280) vs. (2 201.2 ± 149)] and [(5 029.7±458) vs. (2 629.4±140)] ,P<0. 05, P<0.05. The analysis of C5aR and P38-MAPK gray values showed that there were significant differences between the model group and normal control group [(702.77 ±122) vs. (388.36±113)], P<0. 05 and [(646.40±181) vs. (307.32 ±61)] ,P<0.05,and those differences also found between the 24 h subgroup and 12 h subgroup. There was a significant positive correlation between C5aR and P38-MAPK (P<0.05 ), and also the P38-MAPK had significant positive relationships with LDH(P<0.05) and CK (P<0.05). Conclusions The C5aR strongly potentiates the P38-MAPK to induce myocardial injury by septic shock.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVEThe interrelation of yield and agronomic traits of Gentiana rigescens was studied for the germplasm and breeding variety of this species.

METHODTwelve agronomic traits, root diameter, root length, root number, root biomass, stem diameter, plant height, the first branch number, leaf length, leaf width, leaf length/leaf width ratio, calyx length, and calyx number of G. rigescens from 26 wild populations in Yunnan were determined for correlation analysis, multiple stepwise regression analysis and path analysis.

RESULTCorrelation analysis showed that there were significantly positive correlation between the traits of aboveground part and the length, diameter, number, and biomass of the root. Multiple stepwise regression analysis showed that length, width, and number of root, plant height, the first branch number, and the calyx number were the main factors that affected the root biomass. Path analysis showed that the diameter, length, and number of the root, the stem height, and the first branch number had a direct positive effect on the root biomass.

CONCLUSIONThe traits, such as high and strong stem, high number of first branch number and shrubby shape could be selected for the breeding and high yielding of G. rigescens.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo investigate the influences of temperature, lightness, storage method, storage time, and gibberellin on seed germination of Gentiana rigescens.

METHODThe germination rates of G. rigescens in different treatments were observed.

RESULT AND CONCLUSIONThe most suitable temperature for the seed germination was 25 degrees C, at which the germination rate was 76.33%. The effect of lightness on the seeds was significantly; the germination rate of the seed was very low. Under the natural condition, the best storage method was dry storage (within 6 months), which could promote the after-ripening of the seed. 100-1 000 mg x L(-1) gibberellic acid could significantly reduce the seed germination time, and 500 mg x L(-1) gibberellic acid increased the germination rate of the seed to 95.00%.
